On November 10, a 13-year-old boy, who was home alone, responded to sounds of someone trying to break in by retrieving his mother’s gun and shooting the alleged intruder, fatally wounding him.

KHOU reported that the incident occurred in Charleston County, South Carolina, at approximately 1:30 p.m., and cited the police report stating that “the boy was by himself in the house when he heard the suspect trying to break in through the back door. The child then took out his mother’s gun and fired through the door.” The suspect returned fire but did not hit the boy. He then fled the scene, and the boy called his mother, who was at work, to tell her what happened. She told him to call the police, and he did.

The suspected home intruder was later apprehended when he was taken to a hospital to get his wound treated. The suspect died at the hospital.

Police said they “recovered a gun from the backyard of the home,” which is believed to be the gun the suspect used to shoot at the boy.
