A Bible found floating in a New Orleans canal led to the discovery of the body of a missing man, authorities say.

When 60-year-old David Lee Thompson went missing last weekend, his family reported the problem and crossed their fingers that their loved one would be found alive. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Family members told police that Thompson had discovered his girlfriend had left her Bible at the House of Healing Church on 2912 Conti Street and decided to walk to her home to return the holy book. Until Friday, Thompson was never seen again by those who know and love him.

Thompson’s girlfriend spotted her Bible floating in the Lafitte Street canal on Friday, prompting authorities to search the waters there.

Not long after, at about 10AM on Friday, Thompson’s body was pulled from the canal.

New Orleans Police Department spokesman Officer Frank Robertson said the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office was investigating the incident and would perform an autopsy to determine the cause of Thompson’s death.
