On Christmas Eve, an off-duty officer, working mall security, shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at him during an altercation inside a Charlotte, North Carolina, mall.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. at Northlake Mall.

According to WCNC, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) said, “there was an argument between two groups of people inside the mall. Officers, who were working off-duty at the mall, responded, and an armed subject was shot by an officer during the altercation.” The suspect was shot after “[pointing] a gun at the officer,” who shot him.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said an investigation into the disruption is underway and that “the subjects involved all have a history of gun violence.” Putney said gang ties cannot be ruled out at this point.

The alleged gunman is believed to have been 18-year-old Daquan Antonio Westbrook—a rapper who went by the name “Donkey Cartel.”

WCNC reports that witnesses say the officer shot the suspect near the mall’s Apple store. The mall was evacuated after the shooting.

Medics responding to the scene said they treated “one patient with a leg injury, one patient with an asthma attack and one patient in labor.”
