Marco Rubio Pledges to Undo Obama’s ‘Unconstitutional’ Executive Gun Control

On January 3, Republican presidential hopeful Marco Rubio pledged to undo President Obama’s “illegal and unconstitutional” executive gun control.

This week, Obama is expected to announce executive actions expanding background checks to cover private gun sellers. His actions are also expected to include new reporting requirements for federally licensed firearms dealers.

According to TIME, Rubio stood before a crowd in Raymond, New Hampshire, on Sunday and said that the executive actions are simply “meant to further erode the Second Amendment.” He said they are an outgrowth of the fact that Obama “is obsessed with gun control.”

Rubio also said that “every single American has a Constitution—and therefore God-given—right to defend themselves and their families.” He asserted that the error of Obama’s pending actions is evident in the way those actions will curtail that which is God-given.

In addition to the crippling blow Obama’s executive gun controls pose to liberty, Rubio pointed out that the controls should also be rejected simply because they will not work; they will not reduce or even hinder the high profile shootings that Obama claims they are intended to stop. Rubio explained that this is because the actions are directed at law-abiding citizens, who have never been the problem.

Rubio said, “Law-abiding gun owners are not the problem in this country. The problem are criminals, and criminals don’t care what laws you pass. You can pass all the gun laws in the world that you want. It will not stop the criminals.”

Moreover, Rubio noted that the San Bernardino attackers passed background checks to acquire the handguns they used in their attack, which is one more demonstration of the fact that background checks do not stop high-profile shooters.

Rubio said that, if elected, he “will reverse President Obama’s executive action on gun rights on his first day in the White House.”
