NRA Declines Invite to Obama’s Gun Control Town Hall and ‘PR Spectacle’

On January 6, the NRA declined an invitation to attend President Obama’s CNN town hall, describing the event at a “PR spectacle orchestrated by the White House.”

According to CNN, the NRA first declined the invite by claiming the White House “organized” the town hall. Thereafter, the NRA doubled down, saying, “The National Rifle Association sees no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House.”

CNN was quick to point out that they have invited other groups to attend as well. Those include Everytown for Gun Safety, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and Gun Owners of America (GOA), among others. Breitbart News spoke with GOA executive director Larry Pratt on January 7 and he laughed out loud when we asked if representatives from his group would attend the town hall.

Pratt said, “No, none of us consider ourselves to be potted plants.”

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest commented on the town hall Thursday, saying, “Well, just to set the record straight … it’s actually hosted by CNN. The president’s desire is to engage in a serious conversation, both with people who share his views about common-sense steps we can take to make our community safer and keep guns out of the wrong hands, but also have a conversation with those who disagree.”

Speaking of those who disagree, one questioner posted a question for Obama on the ATF Headquarters Facebook page. The questioner asked, “So, say I am a federal agency, and I sell a bunch of guns to Mexican cartels, do I need a federal firearms license?”
