Runner Dies in ‘Krispy Kreme Challenge’ Race

A man died one mile into the 12th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge race in Raleigh, NC.

Those considered “Challengers” must eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the middle of the race.

The 58-year-old man dropped out after a mile due to chest pains. Doctors declared him dead at Rex Hospital.

“We regretfully confirm that a participant of today’s Krispy Kreme Challenge has died. A 58-year-old male stepped out of the race within the first mile and reported having chest pains. He was transported by EMS to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead. We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones,” wrote the Krispy Kreme Challenge directors in a press statement.

“On behalf of the entire N.C. State community, our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family members and loved ones,” stated university spokesman Brad Bohlander.

The Park Scholars at North Carolina State University manages the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which supports the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
