A liquor store clerk allegedly under assault by two masked suspects pulled a gun from beneath his cash register and opened fire on April 12, ending the assault and causing the suspects to flee the scene.

The alleged assault and the armed response occurred in Lexington, Tennessee. Police say the “entire incident was caught on surveillance cameras, but that they are not yet ready to release it.”

According to WBBJ, clerk Johnny Adams says “two masked men came in [to the store] with what looked like a gun, demanding money and punching him in the face.” He added that one of the two men allegedly kept saying, “I’m going to rob you, I’m going to rob you.”

Adams said he was compliant until one of the two suspects allegedly punched him in the nose, at which point he grabbed his pistol from under the register and opened fire. He barely missed the suspect. He then chased the suspects out of the store and fired again. Adams said, “I’m 61, and this is the first time that I’ve ever shot a gun. No wonder I shot the wall, but I really meant to hit him.”

Lexington Police Department Capt. Jeff Middleton explained that Adams had every right to use such force in defense of himself, saying, “If they’re in fear of death or bodily injury, they have the right to defend themselves.”

The suspects are described as “light skinned black men driving an older model Camaro.”
