Donald Trump Takes on Protesters in California: ‘Felt Like I Was Crossing the Border’

BURLINGAME, California — GOP frontrunner Donald Trump spoke to a sold out luncheon at the California GOP Convention on Friday, despite being advised to cancel his speaking event due to anti-Trump protesters who forced the billionaire to abandon his motorcade in order to enter the Hyatt, where the convention was being held.

“That was not the easiest entrance I’ve ever made,” Trump joked after coming into the ballroom to speak with the audience, who were notified about his delay due to the protest. “My wife called. She said, ‘There are helicopters following you.’ We went under a fence and through a fence and, oh boy, felt like I was crossing the border actually. It’s true.”

“I was crossing the border, but I got here,” he added as the audience laughed at his border reference. “They said, ‘Mr. Trump it would be really much easier sir if you didn’t speak today and just left and went back immediately to Indiana, and I said, you know, we can’t let these people down.”

“That was a different kind of a thing,” he added about the entrance. “I went through dirt and mud and under fences. You all went through the lobby, I went under fences. I am just trying to dust off the dirt.”

Protesters began gathering outside the Hyatt at least three hours before the billionaire arrived. Hundreds of protesters gathered, clashing with police, but eventually dissipated after Trump left the building following his speech.

Breitbart News was told some of the protesters came from progressive groups such as Free the Nipple, although Breitbart News couldn’t independently confirm that report. Many of the protesters were Hispanic.
