“I’m not [voting] for someone who cheats in golf,” Oscar De La Hoya says of Donald Trump.
The Olympic gold medalist says he knows this firsthand.
“I was teeing on the first hole,” the former boxer says of an outing at Trump National in L.A. two years ago, “and next thing I know here comes a golf cart. It’s Donald Trump: ‘Oscar, can I play with you?’”
The six-division champion naturally said yes to the course owner, and says he watched in amazement how Trump bent the rules to his advantage. He claims the billionaire-businessman hit four balls off the first tee, discounting each one as a warmup. He says Trump miraculously found a ball right down the middle of the fairway. “We’re like, ‘OK, yeah,’ we’re cracking up, not in front of his face,” De La Hoya recalls.
He remembers another ball traveling out of bounds. “We get up there,” the retired boxer noted of the green, “and he’s like, ‘Oh, my ball’s right here!’ Three feet away. ‘And by the way, I’m going to pick it up, it’s a gimme.’”
De La Hoya and other boxing promoters have used Trump as a ploy to win over Hispanic boxing audiences to their events. Bob Arum promoted a “No Trump” undercard of Latino fighters on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley event in April and De La Hoya continues to generate press for his Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan pay-per view this weekend by invoking Trump’s name. Last week, De La Hoya said he would like to fight Trump in a boxing match and invited him to his blockbuster Cinco de Mayo-weekend event.
“I have Amir Khan, who’s the most popular Muslim fighter from the U.K., fighting the most popular Mexican fighter, who is a superstar named Canelo Alvarez, opening up T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas on May 7th, live on HBO PPV,” De La Hoya told Fox Business’s Neil Cavuto. “Trump, let me invite you so you can take a look at what a Muslim and a Mexican can generate in this beautiful country of the USA.”
