On Thursday, a Baptist pastor discovered Carlie Marie Trent and her alleged abductor, Gary Simpson, on his property, and he held Simpson at gunpoint until police arrived.

A search for Carlie had been ongoing since Simpson allegedly took her out of a Rogersville, Tennessee, school on May 4, then disappeared.

Pastor Roger Carpenter was searching land with Donnie Lawson when they discovered Simpson and Carlie in a trailer in Hawkins County, Tennessee, which is in the rural portion of east Tennessee.

Fox News reports that Carpenter drew a firearm and held Simpson at gunpoint while Lawson contacted the police. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Mark Gwyn reacted by praising the way the community had joined with law enforcement in the search for Carlie.

Gwyn then spoke of Carpenter and Lawson specifically, saying, “This is a case of two heroes who went on their property to see if, by chance, if they were there, and they were. I think this is a clear message to the public that we need your help on these kind of cases.”

Simpson is not only Carlie’s alleged abductor, but also her uncle. He has now been “arrested and charged with especially aggravated kidnapping.”
