Breitbart News recently sat down with Kelli Ward, who is running to unseat Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and remove the GOP establishment’s crippling hold on politics.

Ward spoke of her love for “the entire constitution and the Bill of Rights”–especially the Second Amendment–and she explained why current efforts to secure more gun control are both unnecessary and wrong.

She said she is tired of watching lawmakers in DC “chip away” at our Second Amendment rights. She said those doing this are “mostly Democrats and progressive liberals, but big government Republicans are often culpable as well.”

Ward said:

When I was in the Arizona state senate the first bill I sponsored was ‘The Second Amendment Protection Act.’ And I offered it every year thereafter and it got further and further each year. However, it was thwarted every year by big government Republicans. So, even though the GOP had a majority, we could not get the necessary support for a Second Amendment Protection Act.

The bottom line is that the political will to protect the Second Amendment at all costs did not exist among some of my colleagues.

We asked Ward about three specific gun controls that are being pushed now at the federal level or are likely to be pushed soon (or be pushed again). The three controls are an “assault weapons” ban, a “high capacity” magazine ban, and universal background checks.

Ward responded:

All three are unnecessary, that’s the simple answer. I don’t like to hear something called an “assault weapon,” I think that that’s a semantic designed by progressive liberals to make people fearful of firearms. I think a “high capacity” magazine ban is also unnecessary, and also the same with expanding background checks.

In concluding, we asked Ward what her position is regarding gun-free zones in public places and on military bases. She explained that she supports doing away with gun-free zones in both areas. She said, “In public places–and especially on military bases–I just don’t agree with gun-free zones. I think they are areas where people who want to cause harm know that they will not be challenged with a firearm.”
