A Missouri man has been arrested and accused of raping, then suffocating to death his own daughter before abandoning the honor student’s body in a motel room.

Jackson County officials have charged 40-year-old Jerry Bausby with one count of first-degree murder and several sexual offenses, including sodomy and incest, after the body of 18-year-old Daizsa Laye Bausby had been found abandoned in a Kansas City, Missouri, motel room in March.

Investigators told the courts that motel surveillance video shows Bausby entering and leaving the establishment the day before his daughter’s body was found. She had been raped and suffocated, medical examiners said.

Bausby reportedly told police he rented the motel room for his daughter and “some of her friends” and that he was only there for 30 minutes. He denied having sex with her, but prosecutors say DNA found in the girl’s body matches her father.

“Daizsa Bausby was an honors student who, according to her obituary, was to graduate as salutatorian,” the Associated Press reported. “The cheerleader also ran track, played basketball and was a Junior ROTC member. She already had amassed enough dual credit hours to earn an associate degree from a local community college, with plans to attend Grambling State University in Louisiana.”

Bausby has a long arrest record going back to at least 1995 for such crimes as drunk driving, theft, drug crimes, domestic assault, and others. Only days after his daughter’s murder, he had a restraining order levied against him to keep him away from his ex-wife, who said he had abused her.

The suspect is in jail on a $750,000 cash bond.
