Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani? That appears to be the ongoing debate over President-elect Donald Trump’s options for Secretary of State in his administration.
But a third option is emerging, as former general and CIA director David Petraeus is expected to meet with Trump today, according to the Trump transition team.
Last week, Petraeus appeared willing to serve in the Trump administration during an interview with BBC radio.
“If you’re asked, you’ve got to serve – put aside any reservations based on campaign rhetoric … and figure out what’s best for the country,” he said.
According to Trump transition sources speaking to Bloomberg News, Trump is considering Petraeus as Secretary of State. Trump transition officials confirmed with reporters that the president-elect would meet with Mitt Romney again on Tuesday, as well as Sen. Bob Corker, another rumored candidate for Secretary of State.
Petraeus successfully led the successful Iraq surge under President George W. Bush before President Barack Obama appointed him to direct the Central Intelligence Agency. He resigned from the Obama administration after he was caught sharing classified documents with his mistress Paula Broadwell who was also writing a book about him.
In 2013, Trump praised Petraeus after the scandal, urging him to move on with his career.
