Kelly is the second Marine and third general to join a Trump administration, after retired U.S. Marine Corps General James Mattis and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn were tapped for Secretary of Defense and national security advisor.

Kelly’s career spanned 45 years and at his latest post, he was responsible for the U.S. military in Latin America and the Caribbean before retiring last January.
