President-elect Donald Trump is meeting with several city Mayors from the U.S. Conference of Mayors at Trump Tower on Thursday.
Members of that meeting include:
- Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett
- New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu
- Columbia, South Carolina Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin
- Burnsville, Minnesota Mayor Elizabeth Kautz
- CEO and Director of U.S. Conference of Mayors Tom Cochran
Additionally, Trump will meet with Joel Kaplan, who worked in the White House under President George W. Bush.
The President-elect is also scheduled to meet with Fox News contributor Pete Hegseth, a veteran and former CEO of Concerned Veterans for America.
Hegseth is reportedly being considered for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs position in Trump’s administration.
On Thursday, Trump’s transition team was asked about concern from veterans groups that there has not been a secrertay of veterans affairs named yet.
“I had the opportunity to chat with the President-elect on this very topic the other day and again this is another one where this position is so important to make sure we get right,” Trump’s spokesman Jason Miller told reporters. “We’re talking about lives of people who have gone and sacrificed everything on behalf of this country, who need help, and our country has a debt that we need to repay them.”
Miller says Trump is going through the process to find someone who understands bureaucracy and how it works, as well as someone who isn’t afraid to get in there and institute strong reforms to deliver for the veterans.
Sean Spicer added that this is “an area that is near and dear to [Trump’s] heart.”
“This is an area that he cares deeply about, reforming the VA, and making sure that the person that comes in and does this has the appropriate skill set to address the appropriate challenges,” Spicer stated.
Trump will also meet with Rep. Peter King (R-NY), Suffolk County Chairman John LaValle, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Dan Domino of New Course Steel on Thursday.
