A Texas man is accused of killing his stepmom because he thought she was “gloating” about the Dallas Cowboys winning a football game, according to court documents.

Pontrey O’Neal Jones, 20, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder but stopped taking medicine for it two years ago, fatally stabbed Magdalena Ruiz inside their South Austin apartment after the Cowboys clinched a 26-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New York Post reported.

Jones, who recently moved in with Ruiz, told investigators that Ruiz disrespected his father and was gloating about the win before the attack.

Jones originally planned to break his sister’s neck, but changed his mind and “developed a plan” against Ruiz that included hiding a black-handled knife underneath the couch so he could use it to attack her later, CBS Austin reported.

At about 10:40 p.m., shortly after the Cowboys racked up their 12th win of the season, Jones grabbed the knife and stabbed Ruiz several times before his father intervened.

Police found Jones 10 minutes later lying naked in the grass near an intersection and took him into custody.

“When informed the victim was deceased, Jones appeared relieved and advised he stabbed the victim multiple times under the belief that a single stab wound would fail to render death,” according to the court affidavit.

Jones told investigators he stopped taking his medications because they would “slow him down” and said he had previously planned to join the military, but didn’t because the pressure was too high and he had disappointed his siblings.

Jones was charged with murder and is being held on $500,000 bond.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help offset Ruiz’s funeral expenses.
