Police Respond to ‘Robbery/Hostage’ Situation on University of Alabama Campus

Tuscaloosa Police have reportedly responded to a “robbery/hostage” situation at a credit union on the University of Alabama campus.

The University of Alabama tweeted:

Local law enforcement and UAPD have responded to a robbery/hostage situation at the Alabama Credit Union located at 220 Bryant Dr. (1 of 2)

Bryant Drive is now closed in the area where the credit union is located.

AL.com spoke to Tuscaloosa Police Lt. Teena Richardson, who said a gunman entered the building “and took the employees inside hostage.” Richardson then indicated that calls about the incident did not suggest a robbery motive at the beginning, saying, “It didn’t come in as a robbery. We don’t know what the issue is.”

A SWAT team is on sight and a helicopter is hovering overhead. “The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the University of Alabama Police Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency” have all joined the Tuscaloosa Police Department on scene.

Police are working to make contact with the suspect.

**UPDATE**

The University of Alabama reports that the suspect whom police had surrounded at the credit union at 220 Bryant Drive has now been taken into custody. U of A tweeted that the “hostages appear to be OK.” The area around the credit union is still closed, but police are working to reopen it.
