Woman Who Opened Fire on Burglary Suspect: He Needed to Know ‘We Want Our City Back’

Woman Shoots Burglar

A Jackson, Mississippi, woman who opened fire on a burglary suspect Thursday morning says he needed to know the people of Jackson “want [their] city back.”

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m.

According to WAPT, Tonya Brooks awoke to the sounds of the suspect allegedly using a crowbar to gain entry into “a storage room.” She retrieved her handgun, went to investigate, and the man fled upon seeing the gun. However, in his frightened state he jumped into his car and drove the the wrong way down the street. He actually drove toward a cul-de-sac instead of an exit.

Brooks observed:

He hopped in his car and drove the wrong way, and it was a cul-de-sac. He had to come out, and I just stood in the street ready to shoot him, let him know, you know, the city of Jackson, we want our city back. We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired.

The suspect then turned around and came back toward Brooks, allegedly trying to hit her with the car, but she stood firm:

I shot at him a couple times and then he tried to run me down, and I shot a couple more times. I think they caught him up the street at the church, so maybe he was getting some religion before he goes to jail, I’m hoping.

Officers soon arrested 47-year-old Darrell Chaffin and he was charged with “attempted house burglary.”
