Bill Abolishing Concealed Permit Requirement Passes NH House, Heads to Governor’s Desk

Lawmakers in the New Hampshire House passed legislation Thursday that abolishes the concealed carry permit requirement for law-abiding citizens in the state.

The bill–SB 12–now heads to Governor Chris Sununu’s (R) desk.

The NRA-ILA, Michael Bloomberg-funded gun control groups lobbied against allowing New Hampshire residents to carry guns for self-defense without a permit, but lawmakers voted to support the Second Amendment instead. NRA spokeswoman Amy Hunter said, “This important piece of legislation will allow New Hampshirites to carry firearms in the manner that best suits their needs. Despite the best efforts of Michael Bloomberg-funded groups to distort the truth, the New Hampshire legislature stood strong for freedom today.”

It should be noted that SB 12 will not only make it easier for law-abiding citizens to carry guns for self-defense but will also make laws governing concealed carry congruent with those governing open carry. No permit is required to openly carry a firearm for self-defense in New Hampshire.

Permitless carry is already the law of the land in twelves states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Vermont, Wyoming, and West Virginia. Although a permit is still required in certain parts of Arkansas and Montana, the vast majority of both states–99.4 percent–allows concealed carry without a permit.

The legislatures of Alabama, Indiana, South Dakota, and Texas are currently considering abolishing the concealed carry permit requirement in their respective states.
