Police: Apparent Murder-Suicide at Texas Community College

Roughly an hour after North Lake College in Irving, Texas, went on lockdown following reports of an “intruder,” police announced the campus had witnessed an apparent murder-suicide.

At 11:43 a.m. CST, North Lake College tweeted:

North Lake College-Intruder Lock-down. Go to nearest room and lock-down. If not at campus STAY AWAY for your own safety (DCCCD Alerts)

AT 11:48 a.m., the Irving Police Department tweeted:

Active shooter at Northlake College – avoid the area.

The Associated Press indicated initial reports were of an “intruder, possibly armed.” These were followed by a school alert “to students late Wednesday morning telling them to barricade themselves in the nearest room and wait for further instructions from police.”

At approximately 12:47 p.m. CST, Irving Police tweeted the apparent murder-suicide:

We have what appears to be one victim deceased & the shooter has committed suicide.

Dallas News quoted Irving police spokesman James McLellan, who said “officers found two bodies in a building on campus. One of them was presumed to be the shooter, and the incident appeared to be a murder-suicide.”

North Lake College is part of the Dallas County Community College system. Their “Weapons (Firearms) Policy” makes clear that the school is a gun-free zone. The policy states:

Students shall not bring on College District property or to any college or College District-sponsored or -related activity any gun, weapon, simulated weapon, or any device identified below:

1. Razors;

2. Chains; or

3. Any other object, including school/college supplies, used in a way that threatens or inflicts bodily injury on another person.
