Former President Bill Clinton is returning to his public speaking tour, appearing at a conference next week to rally America’s mayors against elements of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
The former president, who missed his chance to serve as “first gentleman” when his wife Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election, was just announced as one of the speakers for the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami Beach, Florida. Clinton will speak at the Celebration of City Livability forum.
Despite support for Trump’s agenda in rural areas, mayors of major American cities have opposed the president on several issues. The conference agenda will include the fight against Trump’s decision to leave the Paris climate agreement and his effort to cut federal funding from sanctuary cities.
More than 250 mayors are expected to attend the event, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, who plans to highlight the global threat climate change poses.
This week, Clinton challenged elements of Trump’s presidency during an InterAction keynote speech in Washington, DC.
Clinton challenged Trump’s assertions that rising crime and illegal immigration were problems in America’s cities.
“In America, despite all the talk you hear, we actually have historically low crime rates,” he said, adding that crime was lower among immigrant populations than Americans born in the country.
Clinton also raised more fears about climate change after Trump pulled the country out of the Paris climate accords.
“We’ve got the whole planet at risk because of climate change, which is proceeding more rapidly than ever before,” he said, warning that “species destruction is at about a 10,000-year high.”
