Over the weekend, police say a Chicago homeowner shot and killed three people “after they broke into his home.”

The incident occurred in East Side neighborhood, which is on the far South Side of the city.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, “A 17-year-old boy, 22-year-old man and 24-year-old woman all suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body at 5:30 p.m.”

NBC 5 reports that “the three people allegedly entered the home through the basement, and the homeowner shot all three of them.” Police arrived on scene to discover all three suspects were deceased.

The homeowner called 911 then secured himself inside “a basement bedroom” while he waited for police to arrive.

Police have not identified the homeowner, but do indicate that he has a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card. Illinois requires residents to go through a background check and secure a FOID card before being allowed to own a gun for home defense.

One of the homeowner’s neighbors said home invasions were on the uptick in the area and he believes his neighbor “did the right thing.”
