Dem. Rep. Introduces 3-Day Waiting Period for Handgun Purchases

Amid the flurry of gun control pushed by Democrats last week, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) introduced legislation to require a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases.

This brings the number of proposed post-Las Vegas shooting gun controls to ten. The previous nine were:

1. Ban on Bump Stocks
2. Ban on Trigger Cranks
3. Ban on Semiautomatic Firearms
4. Implementation of Universal Background Checks
5. Ban on “Assault Weapons”
6. Ban on “High-Capacity” Magazines
7. Opposition to Concealed Carry
8. Opposition to National Reciprocity
9. Australian-Style Gun Ban

Krishnamoorthi’s bill would require a three-day waiting period on all handgun sales — whether private or retail — with exemptions for immediate family members and situations where the gun is being loaned “for any lawful purpose.”

It is ironic to note that Krishnamoorthi’s bill would have done nothing to prevent the Vegas attack, and there are at least three reasons which prove this is so. The main reason is that the attacker passed background checks for his guns, so passing a waiting period would have been no problem. The second reason is that the attacker used long guns rather than handguns in his attack. The third reason is that waiting periods are already in place in states like Florida where the Orlando Pulse attacker simply passed a background check and then endured a three-day wait before carrying out his attack.

In the end, Krishnamoorthi’s bill is more gun control for the sake of gun control.
