Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it would be political suicide for Democrats to shut down the federal government if an amnesty for nearly 800,000 to 3.5 million illegal aliens is not included in a year-end spending bill.

In an interview with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, McConnell confirmed that a decision by Democrats to shut down the government unless illegal aliens on the President Obama-created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are given amnesty would be “pretty dumb.”

The exchange went as follows:

LAURA INGRAHAM: Would this be political suicide for the Democrats to shut the government down over amnesty for illegal immigrants?

MAJORITY LEADER MCCONNELL: Yeah. I think that would be a pretty dumb place for them to end up and I don’t think in the end they will end up there.

Though a government shutdown may be politically detrimental to Democrats, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) co-author of the DREAM Act, one of the most expansive amnesty bills in Congress, has reiterated to the Washington Post that he will vote to shut down the government if an amnesty for illegal aliens is not passed.

“That’s my position,” Durbin said on supporting a government shutdown over amnesty. “There’s too much at stake here. We can’t let this to slip into January, February with a March 5 deadline. It should be done, it can be done, easily, simply and quickly.”
