Shareblue’s Eric Boehlert After Florida School Shooting: How Much Money Did NRA Take from Russia in 2016?

Media Matters alum Eric Boehlert spent Wednesday evening probing whether there is a connection between the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the National Rifle Association (NRA), and Russia’s Kremlin.

Boehlert, who has moved on from the David Brock-led Media Matters to the David Brock-led Shareblue media, took up the topic after failed Missouri Senate candidate Jason Kander tweeted: “The leadership of [the NRA] has an agenda and it ain’t got a damn thing to do with gun rights. It’s 100% about gun sales. This Republican Congress is trading the lives of children for campaign contributions.”

Boehlert then responded by asking, “How much $$$$$ did [the NRA] accept from Russia in 2016?”

“[A]nd why would Russia be so interested in seeing America drowning in guns?” he continued.

Boehlert appears to have slept on this line of thinking — then continued his investigation unfazed Thursday morning. He shared a November 2017 story from OpenSecrets, “Audit shows NRA spending surged $100 million amidst pro-Trump push in 2016,” then asked, “how much of this $$ came from Russia?”

When several people mocked the suggestion that the Florida school shooting might ultimately be traced back to Russian contributions to the NRA, Boehlert called the naysayers “dopes” who “don’t keep up [with] the news,” then linked to a January McClatchy article titled “FBI investigating whether Russian money went to NRA to help Trump.”

The truth is out there, Eric.
