A woman in Rome, Georgia, sprayed an alleged burglary suspect with mace Saturday night then retrieved a gun and shot him.

Police responded and found the wounded burglary suspect lying in the front yard.

The Rome News-Tribune reports that the woman heard noises around 10 p.m. Soon, 44-year-old David Ray Hudgens allegedly entered the woman’s apartment and attacked.

The woman sprayed Hudgens with mace “then grabbed a pistol that was on a table in the living room.”

Hudgens then wiped the mace from his eyes and allegedly charged the armed woman, so she shot him. A witness responded to the “commotion” and helped get the suspect on the ground, where police soon located him.

Hudgens was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
