President Donald Trump announced that he will consider an additional $100 billion in tariffs against China in retaliation for new proposed tariffs on American goods.
“In light of China’s unfair retaliation, I have instructed the USTR to consider whether $100 billion of additional tariffs would be appropriate under section 301 and, if so, to identify the products upon which to impose such tariffs,” Trump said in a statement released by the White House.
China retaliated to Trump’s proposal to level $50 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports, challenging their trade policies and the stealing of intellectual property from the United States.
The Chinese government announced their own proposal to raise $50 billion in tariffs on American exports of technology, soybeans, airplanes, and vehicles.
“Rather than remedy its misconduct, China has chosen to harm our farmers and manufacturers,” Trump said.
Trump vowed that he would continue challenging China’s unfair trade practices, but would remain open to discussions with the Chinese to achieve reciprocal trade.
“I am committed to enabling American companies and workers to compete on a level playing field around the world, and I will never allow unfair trade practices to undermine American interests,” he concluded.
