Last week, federal and state prosecutors sent subpoenas to drug company Valeant over its recent price hikes for at least two of its disease-fighting medicines. Democrats in Congress have been pressing for hearings on recent increases in drug prices, especially generic drugs. With a national election just months away, these recent actions are just the first moves in a politically charged issue.

Marco Rubio Campaign Long on Style, Short on Substance

Marco Rubio actually raised just $5.7 million in the quarter. This may seem a minor difference, but the amount the campaign claimed is a 5 percent inflation of the actual amount. Rubio’s cash-on-hand, however, wasn’t $11 million, but $9.5 million, around 15 percent less than reported and less than Jeb Bush. Rubio’s spending was double the amount spent by Carly Fiorina, who raised some $1 million more than Rubio and is roughly in the same polling position. Rubio’s spending is almost the same as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who raised more than twice the amount Marco did.

Judge Rules Paxton Can Get Records Related to Grand Jury Selection: Prosecutors Say No Improprieties Occurred

The criminal court judge in the Attorney General Ken Paxton securities fraud case has ruled that his defense lawyers can get records related to the selection of the grand jury. The prosecutors say that no improprieties occurred in the grand jury selection and empanelment. Paxton is seeking evidence to see if the grand jury was stacked against him.

Cat Crucified in Upstate New York Park

A black and grey striped cat was nailed to a tree, crucifixion-style, in Upstate New York. According to Schenectady Police Lt. Mark McCracken, “The cat in its entirety was nailed to the tree. … The deceased cat was processed by one of our crime scene guys and taken to a local vet who’s arranging for a necropsy.”

Illegal Aliens Lose Battle in Birth Certificate Lawsuit Against Texas

A federal judge signed an order on Friday that denied a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit filed by citizens of Mexico and several Central American nations claiming entitlement to birth certificates for their children born in the United States. They sued the Vital Statistics Unit of the Texas Department of State Health Services saying the agency denied them the certificates because they did not possess the required identification.

Cocaine Smugglers in Puerto Rico Using Same Methods as Mexican Cartels

On October 7, the US Department of Justice announced the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) had dismantled a drug trafficking organization responsible for the transportation of multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine and drug money between Puerto Rico and the Continental United States. This organization was using drug mules to smuggle kilograms of cocaine hidden in suitcases on airplanes.
