Wanda Sykes: 'Hope' he doesn't mean what he says

Actress and stand-up comic Wanda Sykes hopes President Obama is smart enough to change his mind about his own policies.

Sykes, who recently announced she is a lesbian, talked to Newsweek for its Commemorative Inaugural Edition — one way the magazine can put the new president on the cover again — about her hopes for his administration.

She applauds the president’s ascension as a sign “The United States of America” now rings true to its words. But she still feels like a second-class citizen because gays cannot marry under U.S. law.

But she has hope for change: Never mind that Obama has gone on the record saying marriage should be between a man and a woman.

“He’s a very smart guy. I’m sure he will eventually get that his beliefs should not infringe upon my rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

So … never mind what he actually says, or the fact that he’s not standing up for Sykes’ full rights at this critical time (Proposition 8 in California is still making news).

I’m sure she would have afforded President McCain the same wriggle room.
