Morning Call Sheet: History For Sale, Witchcraft, and Hollywood's China Infatuation

CULVER STUDIOS UP FOR SALE

Over the course of my short, undistinguished Hollywood career, I had the opportunity to visit every major studio lot in Southern California many times over and other than the MGM lot (which is now Sony), Culver Studios felt like it had the most history. You could feel that history, probably because the iconic office building so memorably displayed at the opening of every David O. Selznick film still stands.

Whenever I had a meeting on any lot, I would always show up an hour or so early in order to tour and gawk. Culver is one of the smaller studios (now), and it’s quite the thing for a movie lover like myself to stand in that big office and imagine Selznick with his feet on the desk reading “Gone With the Wind.”

I don’t remember why, but once I was at Culver at night after everyone had left for the day and pretty much had the run of the place. I took my time to tour and memorize and take as much in as I could. Thankfully, except for the equipment and other necessities, the place doesn’t look modernized. And so it was like walking through a quietly still time capsule from another era … with the ghosts of the immortals flitting in and out, going on about their business of creating masterpieces.

In the eyes of Hollywood, why is it okay to do business with the human rights abusers in China when it wasn’t in South Africa?

LAST NIGHT’S SCREENING

The Craft (1996)A stupid concept (four alienated Catholic high school girls dabble in witchcraft) is much better executed than you might expect. What really holds the film together is Fairuza Balk as the leader of the coven who goes bad. Really bad. I always thought she was destined for bigger things, but what do I know.

CLASSIC PICK FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

TCM:

3:15 PM EST: Naked City (1948) — A step-by-step look at a murder investigation on the streets of New York. Dir: Jules Dassin Cast: Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Duff, Dorothy Hart. BW-96 mins, TV-14, CC.

Smart, tightly told docu-drama directed by Jules Dassin, who’s probably most famous for the heist film of all heist films “Rififi.” Just as that classic took us through every detail of a jewel heist, here we see the same fascinating, detailed approach towards a murder investigation.

Besides having an engaging, fast-paced story, “Naked City” offers two worthwhile opportunities: Watching Barry Fitzgerald in the role of a tough police lieutenant and some truly splendid on-location cinematography in New York City.
