Christie Orders N.J. Flags Lowered to Half-Staff to Honor Houston

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie famously recoiled at the connection between the trash-talking denizens of “Jersey Shore” and his home state. But Christie is making sure the Garden State’s own Whitney Houston will be paid the appropriate respect when she’s laid to rest this week.

Obviously, Whitney Houston was an important part of the fabric — the cultural fabric of this state,” Christie told reporters at a press conference Tuesday, saying that Houston “belongs in the same category” as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen – also artists born in the Garden State.

“Her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride” for the people of New Jersey, Christie added.

Christie previously ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff following the June 2011 death of E Street Band mainstay and Jersey native Clarence Clemons.
