Trailer Talk: 'Glory' Showcases Fight for Religious Freedom

The Cristero War isn’t fodder for many movies.

The overlooked chapter in world history is still one needing to be told, the tale of people who risked everything to maintain their religious liberty. Sadly, that’s a theme that needs to be addressed nearly a century later.

For Greater Glory,” starring Andy Garcia, Peter O’Toole and Eva Longoria, recalls that tumultuous time. Director Dean Wright previously supplied some of the special effects for films like “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Now, he’s tasked with enlightening the public on a pivotal part of Mexican history.

The film stars Garcia as the reluctant leader of a resistance movement meant to restore the religious liberties of his people.

This isn’t a big-budget studio offering, but the scale and effects look first rate. And Garcia remains an under-appreciated actor. Just check out his more comical side in the sleeper comedy “City Island.” Here, he conveys the gravitas required for an historical epic.

And his best line, by far, in the trailer could be one quoted for some time – “men fire bullets, but God decides where they will land …”

“For Greater Glory” hits theaters June 1.
