Studio Boss Admits Luck a Factor with Hits

LOS ANGELES, April 7 (UPI) —
Studio boss Ron Meyer stood by his statements that Hollywood is still fully capable of turning out films that bomb.

Meyer, president and chief operating officer of NBC Universal Studios, told an audience at UCLA Friday making great films can be difficult and the wrong combinations of story and talent can lead to disappointment.

The Hollywood Reporter said Meyer declined to back off a statement he made last year in which a profanity was attached to his description of the bad movies that are churned out by the industry on a regular basis.

Meyer contended the element of luck added to the importance of franchises and sequels. The name-recognition element from a box-office hit, he said, gives studios better odds of repeating that success with a sequel.
