Trailer Talk: 'Stand Up Guys' Gives Us Best Odd Couple in Decade

“Stand Up Guys” unites two actors who simply needed to be in a film together: Al Pacino and Christopher Walken.

Both inhabit parts of the Hollywood sandbox that no other can touch. Sometimes they are horrible in films, sometimes they are great. One thing they always are is mesmerizing – impossible to take the eyes off of and shut the ears off from for reasons both good and bad.

Synopsis:  A pair of aging con men try to get the old gang back together for onelast hurrah before one of the guys takes his last assignment — to killhis comrade.

Thoughts: Pacino and Walken have been praised, pushed to the side, critiqued, hated, loved, impersonated and everything in between. Now, the two screen giants are coming together for the first time. Judging by the trailer, don’t expect a slew of tense diner scenes like the one between Pacino and De Niro in “Heat.” “Stand Up Guys” seems to be offering an odd mix of comedy, drama and old school fun.

The trailer also suggests this film may have a few surprises to throw at audiences. The central dilemma seems straight out of a Scorsese movie, and who the hell knows what’s gonna happen with Pacino, Walken and Alan Arkin all in the same scene? It could be excellent, or tragic, or a bit of both. Only one thing is sure: it’ll be impossible to keep our eyes off of and ears turned off from.

“Stand Up Guys” hits theaters on Jan. 11, 2013.
