New Fox Comedy Tracks Marijuana Legalization Trend

Showtime’s long-running dramedy “Weeds” may be over after eight seasons, but Fox is promising a new series built around marijuana.

The Happy Tree, from former Entourage executive producers Rob Weiss, Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson, centers on a brilliant young corporate attorney who, after a nervous breakdown, quits his job and seeks a life of peace and serenity on Venice Beach only to find himself the unlikely voice for the marijuana “legalize it” movement.

Pot comedies have been around since the heyday of “Cheech & Chong” – and further back if you count the unintentionally hilarious “Reefer Madness.” Now, Hollywood must contend with the blurry legal aspects of pot in the modern age. That could add some entertaining legal layers to content like “The Happy Tree.” Or it might make outlaw caricatures like Cheech & Chong as harmless as the alcohol-lovin’ Norm from “Cheers.”
