Showtime Preps Vatican Drama for 2013

Showtime, the pay cable network whose recent productions include Oliver Stone’s far-left “Untold History of the United States” and the upcoming miniseries on climate change, is prepping a new drama set in within the Catholic Church.

The pilot for “The Vatican, to be directed by “Gladiator” veteran Ridley Scott, will be “a provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics – set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church,” according to Showtime.

“The series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world’s most hidden institutions,” the description continues.

Two-time Oscar nominee (“Quiz Show,” “Donnie Brasco”) and former movie critic Paul Attanasio penned the hour-long script.
