One can imagine the interior of The Daily Show’s writing room earlier this week when news of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation broke.

“Hey, the Pope is retiring! Is there any way we can insult both Catholics the world over and GOP?”

Voila, the clip below from last night’s episode:

The conversation between host Jon Stewart and correspondent John Oliver brought up the 2012 GOP presidential candidates as possible Pope replacements.

Stewart: How are they even in the running for Pope?

Oliver: What would they know about appealing to a floundering organization dominated by old white men clinging to an arcane moral code who must reluctantly embrace change to remain relevant?
