The ABC sitcom Modern Family features a gay couple raising an adopted daughter. The show doesn’t preach, stop to send overt messages or otherwise stir up political matters.
Yet series co-creator Steve Levitan still hopes the show’s very presence will have an impact on the cultural at large. Specifically, the Supreme Court’s consideration of whether to change the law in California, known as Proposition 8, forbidding same-sex couples from getting married.
“If we played even the tiniest role in helping to defeat Prop 8 and giving all gay people the equal rights they deserve, then I’m a happy man,” said Levitan.
