Jack Keroac’s On the Road inspired a generation of subversive thinkers, grooving on the author’s anti-authority posturing and willingness to flaunt conventional mores.
The film version of the novel took decades to reach the screen, but when it finally came together it drew one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart.
Yet after seven weeks of release, the film has yet to crack the $1 million mark–or even half that amount.
Last weekend, On the Road drew a per-screen average of $1,538 in 77 theaters, a figure trounced by similarly limited releases like Ginger & Rosa and The Gatekeepers.
On the Road, which boasts an impressive cast including rising star Garrett Hedlund, Terrence Howard, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi and Amy Adams, was released briefly at the tail end of 2012 for possible awards consideration without success.
