Trailer Talk: 'The Purge' Says America Reborn by Letting Citizens Run Wild

The Purge shows us the kind of real hope and change voters had in mind circa 2008.

The upcoming thriller reveals an America where the unemployment rate is a skimpy one percent and crime is down to historic lows.

How did the country reach such marvelous milestones sans our Celebrity in Chief? Turns out that once a year the government puts a freeze on all emergency services–no cops, no ambulances, no rules. Nothing is illegal, and citizens can rage all they want for a full 12 hours.

The trailer suggests that window is enough to let us tap our inner demons and then return to our normally scheduled lives. Does it really work? And what happens to a family that dares to protect someone targeted for death?

The trailer suggests plenty of political possibilities, although the set up may simply be an excuse for a new brand of home invasion thriller. The movie is a Universal Studios production, not an indie film which may be more likely to strive for political points.

Either way, it’s an original premise led by the always interesting Ethan Hawke.

The Purge, with or without conservative sucker punches, hits theaters May 31.
