HBO Prepping Gorbachev Biopic, Ex-Soviet Union President Will Serve as Consultant

When HBO wanted to make a movie about Sarah Palin the channel consulted McCain/Palin campaign officials who had Paul Bunyan-sized axes to grind against the former governor. After all, the media tried to blame the ticket’s loss in 2008 on Palin, and those consultants likely followed suit.

The result? The unfair and cartoonishly unbalanced Game Change.

Now, HBO is looking to make a movie about the Soviet Union’s first and last president, Mikhail Gorbachev. And the company hired Gorbachev himself, as well as one of his celebrity admirers, to help shape the project. Gorbachev will serve as a consultant on the upcoming film, while Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio is one of several high-profile producers.

The two met when the Russian Nobel Peace Prize winner appeared in DiCaprio’s environmental movie The 11th Hour. Gorbachev later presented the actor with an environmental award at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin.

Also attached is producer Tom Hanks, who has a long relationship with HBO via its Band of Brothers and The Pacific miniseries projects.
