While the Obama administration has greenlit force-feeding of Guantanamo Bay detainee hunger strikers, some in the Muslim community are fighting back – including rapper Mos Def.
Marking the launch of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month during which fasting from morning to evening is de rigueur, the group Reprieve released a video in which Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey) undergoes force feeding by feeding tube. The video is directed by BAFTA award-winner Asif Kapadia, director of documentaries including Senna and movies including Far North.
The video depicts a feeding tube forced down Mos Def’s nose into his stomach. According to standard procedure, medical personnel spend 20 to 30 minutes moving the tube down to the stomach, and take serious measures to prevent vomiting and keep the jaw open to prevent detainees from biting the tube.
