Earlier this year, we saw This is the End, which including Hollywood’s A-list comedians playing heightened versions of themselves. It was hysterical but ended up being a bit forgettable in the weeks after its release. In a year where we haven’t seen too many comedies, Warner Bros. Pictures’ latest film, We’re the Millers could be the funniest film of 2013. It certainly is so far!
We’re the Millers has something for everyone to laugh at, and I was laughing throughout the entire film. There’s physical comedy, witty dialogue and fantastic performances from the entire cast in each and every scene. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s (2004’s Dodgeball) film is expertly paced and an all around good time in the theatres.
David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a local pot dealer in Denver. Between dealing to soccer moms, bartenders and cooks, although he won’t deal to kids, David keeps a low profile in his apartment building. When David tries to rescue a runaway named Casey (Emma Roberts) from three street thugs, they end up stealing his stash and cash, which leaves him in a major debt with his supplier Brad (Ed Helms).
To break even, Brad asks David to go to Mexico and smuggle in a “smidge” of marijuana across the border for him. David decides the best way to do this is to create a fake family so he doesn’t look suspicious, so he recruits the stripper who lives in his building Rose (Jennifer Aniston), the loner kid Kenny (Will Poulter) and the runaway Casey to help him complete the job.
Screenwriters Steve Faber (Wedding Crashers) and Dan Fybel created a screenplay that is truly hilarious. The actors breathe life into the script, but the dialogue and timeliness of the jokes is really the star of the film. Pay attention to the scene where Kenny gets bitten by a tarantula–it’s gut-busting.
Aniston, Sudeikis, Roberts and Poulter created a family that everyone can relate to and laugh at, but all films wouldn’t nearly be as great without the help of the necessary supporting characters. Kathryn Hahn and Nick Offerman play the married couple that the family meets during their road trip back home. Some of the most memorable scenes in the film include these two actors and they make the film all the more enjoyable.
Stay through the credits for some laughable bloopers from the entire cast. Friends fans will definitely appreciate one gag in particular.
We’re the Millers is a lively comedy with a few raunchy moments and a ton of heart. Sudeikis and Aniston have wonderful chemistry and Poulter and Roberts provide equal laughs. This film might just be the most fun you’ll have in theatres this summer.
