The usual sub-par October frame got quite a jolt with Gravity’s $55 million opening last week. Film easily became Fall’s biggest opener ever. Could see high results this week as well.
Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:
1. “Gravity” ($32 million) – Another box office success for Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) who also had this Summer’s mega-hit The Heat. Her co-star George Clooney? Well, we’d have to go back a few years (almost a decade, really) to find him in a box office hit this big. Another solid weekend awaits this sci-fi hit.
2. “Captain Phillips” ($18 million) – Sold drama structure but director Paul Greengrass is very “hit or miss” nowadays at the box office. Dare I say, shaky cam? Still, despite the fixed audience, Tom Hanks’ latest should open decently.
3. “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2” ($13 million)– Its box office pace may have fallen behind the original Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but not by much. Pulling strong numbers during this time of year remains impressive.
4. “Machete Kills” ($8.7 million) – The first Machete had all sorts of problems. Uneven script, stereotypes for characters and a terrible weekend opening. How terrible? Machete remains one of the few films to ever open #1 on Friday, only to slip all the way to #4 by Monday (ouch). So Sensei’s not expecting much from the sequel.
5. “Prisoners” ($3.4 million) – Considering how competitive the frame is right now, this drama has done remarkably well. Look for an easy break over the $50 million domestic mark.
In other calls:
Look for Romeo and Juliet to pull around $600,000 off its 450+ theaters.
