Trailer Talk: 'Captain America' Sequel Talks Preventative War, Fear

One of the many highlights of The Avengers came watching Captain America embrace his God-fearing, flag-waving image.

Now, with the second solo Captain America film coming our way next year, the character might be heading to more left-of center terrain.

The first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit the web today, and it teases a story that delves into the ambiguities of war, peace and protecting the innocent.

The trailer keeps the film’s driving narrative a secret. We get the usual superhero accouterments, from the slinky Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to plenty of pyrotechnics. And then there’s Robert Redford, cast as a government official who appears to be far more complicated, morally speaking, than meets the eye.

Chris Evans is Steve Rogers once more, a patriot ready to give his life for his country–and with a hearty sense of humor witness his barbershop quartet crack. In The Winter Soldier, Rogers questions the tactics being used to snuff out the latest threat to the nation.

“I thought the punishment usually came after the crime,” Captain America asks a stern looking Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Will the presence of the reliably progressive Redford mean a left-leaning super story heading our way? We’ll find out April 4, 2014.
