Illegal Immigrant Wins Grammy

On Sunday, La Santa Cecilia, a so-called “crossover” rock band whose accordion player is an illegal immigrant, won a Grammy for their Treinta Dias album in the “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album” category.

Jose “Pepe” Carlos, the accordion player, is a “DREAMer.” He was brought to the United States when he was six by his parents when they came into the country illegally

The group formed in 2005 by lead singer Marisol Hernandez and Miguel Ramirez to “blend ethnicities and identities uniquely forged in multicultural Los Angeles,” and has used pop culture to push for comprehensive immigration reform, even writing a song against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

La Santa Cecilia, which performed at an amnesty rally in Washington, D.C. in 2013, dedicated the award to all of the illegal immigrants in the country.
