Wallace Shawn doesn’t consider himself a friend of Woody Allen. The two made one film together–Manhattan–back in 1979 and haven’t worked together since.
Yet Shawn, best known for his colorful turn in The Princess Bride, says he simply finds it hard to believe that Allen might have sexually molested his daughter as Dylan Farrow recently alleged in an open letter via The New York Times.
Shawn calls Allen “extraordinary and even inspiring in his thoughtfulness, seriousness and honesty,” which makes the notion that the auteur could have committed such a heinous crime all but impossible in the actor’s eyes.
I personally would have to say that it would take overwhelming evidence to convince me that he had sexually abused a child, just as it would take overwhelming evidence to convince me that Desmond Tutu, Franklin D. Roosevelt or Doris Lessing had sexually abused a child,” he said.
