Turner Classic Movies, USPS to Honor Charlton Heston with Postage Stamp

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and the United States Postal Service are honoring acting legend and former NRA President Charlton Heston with “a commemorative Forever postage stamp.”

According to Turner, a stamp dedication will take place April 11 during the 2014 TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. Heston’s wife Lydia Clarke Heston, his son Fraser Heston, and his daughter Holly Rochell will be in attendance.

That ceremony also will mark the official “first date of issue” for the stamp.

TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz will host the commemoration ceremony. He previously described Heston as an “actor who brought intensity and power to the screen that few could ever match and nobody could ever forget.”

In addition to Heston’s acting prowess, his passion for gun rights is unforgettable. On May 20, 2000, he stood before an audience at the 129th NRA Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina and famously said:

When freedom shivers in the cold shadow of true peril, it’s always the patriots who first hear the call. When loss of liberty is looming, as it is now, the siren sounds first in the hearts of freedom’s vanguard. The smoke in the air of our Concord bridges and Pearl Harbors is always smelled first by the farmers, who come from their simple homes to find the fire and fight. Because they know that sacred stuff resides in that wooden stock and blued steel.

…So as we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice–to hear and to heed–from my cold dead hands.
