LOS ANGELES, April 27 (UPI)–Steven Spielberg is the latest director to take on the beloved works of British author Roald Dahl, after Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.
The Lincoln director will direct an upcoming film adaptation of the Dahl classic The BFG, in which a young girl befriends a kind-hearted giant, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The project will reunite Spielberg with the woman who wrote E.T., Oscar-nominated screenwriter Melissa Mathison.
DreamWorks acquired the rights to the book back in 2011 and a slew of directors have been considered for the project, including Chris Columbus and John Madden.
The book, published in 1982, inspired a 1989 animated TV movie.
