Rap singer Kanye West says he’s on a “mission from God” to implement “change,” but he noted that President Obama’s efforts are useless because change cannot be effected from the White House.
West, 37, was a guest on Power106 FM in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 19, ranting about his prowess with God’s missions and slamming Obama for being ineffective.
The singer started out criticizing Obama, apparently for not effecting enough change. “You can’t effect change from inside the White House like that. … You gotta have the money,” he said.
Yet only a moment later, West said that money was not the issue. “Good ideas usually aren’t connected to money as much. … Creativity and extreme genius are extremely cheap.”
This isn’t the first time West has attacked Obama. Late last year, the singer asserted, “I don’t give a f— about what none of [what] the President’s got to say.”
Obama has not remained silent about West, either. In 2009, he called West a “jackass” after the singer jumped onstage and interrupted an MTV awards show.
On the LA radio station, West went on to boast of his own “creativity and extreme genius,” comparing himself to Apple founder Steve Jobs.
The “Yeezus” singer confused listeners further, warning people not to listen to his actual words, but instead to somehow discern what he is “feeling” when he blurts things out. “Don’t worry about how I’m saying what I’m saying,” West said. “Look at what I’m saying and how I feel and how my intent is.”
The singer did not elaborate on what exactly that meant. Instead, he went on to slam those who criticize him, and he seemed to set himself up as an important cultural force, stating, “You do not want to go against [my] power.”
Then West proclaimed, “I’m working on one mission, and that’s a mission from God. I’m gonna make it very clear exactly what I’m here to do. I’m here to help. I’m going to apply all the blessings I’ve got.”
This week, it seems West has been in the mood to criticize. On Tuesday, he was heard bashing celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz for refusing to photograph his recent wedding to Kim Kardashian.
Leibovitz noted that they had not arrived at an agreement to do so, but she took the moral high road and didn’t join in the slap fest, simply saying that she would be pleased to work with West sometime in the future.
But Kanye West has a long history of distemper, even violence. In 2012, West pleaded “no contest” to a misdemeanor charge in an assault on a Los Angeles photographer and was later sentenced to anger management therapy and two years of probation.
